California - part 2 - Blackbox, Founders circle

02.08.2013
California - part 2 - Blackbox, Founders circle
Tuesday, July 22

Yesterday was a fun day, let's see if this day could be even better.
After first night of normal sleep in a few days, we woke up at 7am, all pumped up and excited what this day will bring us. We weren't aware how day is going to be good :)

So, after the shower we went downstairs for a breakfast. Since the kitchen is shared, few guys were already there. First thing we heard is: Hi two Daniels, and it sounded fun, they already knew our names. During the breakfast we had a smalltalk about mansion, where to work, what should we do during the day, who can help us, etc.
Since the whole house is available to work from, we had chance to choose our workspace. We had chosen super-mega confortable bag chairs from last event by the pool.

We settled down there, took our laptops out, and started working. After few hours of planning, taking notes, group skype chat with other members of our team (Mijo Dzalto and Vjeko Skarica), we were ready for action. We were ready to pitch to other residents of the house, especially because that evening was planned event called "Founders Circle" where we all sit in a circle a talk about ourselves, our businesses and challenges in business.

After lunch and some hanging with guys in a house, we went back to work. Prepare the notes, demo application, repeat most important things and so on. Since the previously mentioned event "Founders Circle" was getting close, we packed our things and went to change clothes in the room.

When we got back from our room in the kitchen and backyard were already some unknown people. We started to meet them, and that's the part where things got already interesting.
Most of the introductions started like this:

- Yo man, my name is Joe. Nice to meet you. Who are you?
- Hi man, I'm Danijel. Nice to meet you. I'm from Bosnia and we run startup called Printheos.
- And my name issssssss Danijel too. Yes, I know, two Daniels. Same team too.
- Holy shit, two Daniels, from Bosnia, same team. I'll definitely remember your names. Nice to meet you guys. What do you actually do?
- ...

And same situation with all other boyz'n'girlz. We approach, Daniel & Daniel, same reaction: Two Daniels? Same country? Cooool man, nice to meet you.
So we already broke the ice with our names, Daniel & Daniel from Bosnia and made a show. Would you forget us on small event like this? :)

When event got started and we sat in circle (arround 25-30 persons, some of the from the house, some of them from outside) things got more interesting. We started with introductions, but they already knew our names :) Few of them were founders or co-founders of some pretty successful startups like: groopic.com, inprisltd.com, melusyn.com and few others. When the questions and answers started, rule was to say someones name and pass him a question. Guess how got first questions? Two Daniels, becuase most of them remembered only our names. :)

Did I mentioned we had pizzas and lot's of beer during the event? Well, yes we did. And after few beers, event was even more interesting and more relaxed. People started to talk more, make jokes and so on. At the end we met lot's of interesting people. Few of them are: Joe (17 yrs old) and he's already making serious business by investing money on stock market and his brothers startup company, Joe's girlfriend which I forgat the name, extra funny Josh (Joe's older brother) who runs his own startup, Shiv - guy from Torronto, Bob - some startup tv show director/editor or something else important for that show, Lee - guy that works in GSV investment firm (they invested in Twitter), Amelia, Xavier and lot's of other people.

Funny part was, when the hour was getting late, and people were already a bit drunk we started to talk about everyting, make jokes, open new beer bottles and so on. At one point we were talking about Bosnia and most of them didn't even knew where that country is. I remember somebody said:
- Ooooh I think where Bosnia is. Is it near to Russia?
I almost fall off the chair since I was laughing that much. Then again we explained where Bosnia is, how beautifull is, how beer cheap is, how you can drive a car somewhere even without licence and things like that. They were amazed. Since Joe was extra fun person, he asked more and more questions, and at the end he looked to his girlfried and said: We have to go to Bosnia :) Few more beers (offcourse) and lot's of jokes Joe pushed me aside and said:

- You like Giants?? You ever saw the game?
- Well, yes I do. Giants are my favorite team. (who they are???). But I never saw the game :( Like I said this is my first time i US.
- Then you'll have to see the game bro. When you got some free time this week, text me and I'll take you to the game. I already have the tickets.
- Oooooo Joe, my brother. You just became my best friend :))

After that we had few more drinks and we finished the night with a smile on our faces. Day was good. We met really interesting persons from all over the world.
That's the end of our first/second day in Sillicon Valley at Blackbox mansion.

One more thing, since we just arrived, we were so confused and tired that we forgat to thank our sponsors for making this trip possible. So thank you all for your support:

Yesterday was a very fun day, so let's see if we can make the next one even better.
After first night of normal sleep in days, we woke up at 7am, all pumped up and excited about everything that's gonna happen. We weren't aware how good the day is actually going to be. :)

After we woke up, first thing we did was to go to the kitchen and get some breakfast. Since the kitchen in the BlackBox mansion is shared, couple of guys were already there. Of course, the first thing we heard was: ''Hi two Daniels''!  It was really fun, because everyone already knew our names. During breakfast, we talked about the mansion with the rest of the people that were there, and what should our activities for that day be.
Since the entire house is one giant work space, we could choose where to work that day. Our choice were those super-mega comfortable bean bag chairs by the pool.

We settled by the pool, took our laptops out, and started working. After few hours of planning, taking notes, group skype chat with other members of our team (Mijo Dzalto and Vjeko Skarica), we were ready  to pitch our project to other residents. There was an event called ''Founders Circle'' planned for that evening where we would all sit in a circle and talk about ourselves, our businesses and day to day challenges we're facing.

After lunch and some hanging with guys, we went back to work. We prepared the notes, demo application, and went through the most important stuff one more time. Since "Founders Circle" was getting close, we packed our things and went to our rooms to change and get ready.

When we got back, the kitchen and backyard were packed with people we didn't know. We started to get acquainted with them, and from that point things started becoming even more interesting.
Most of the introductions started like this:

- ''Yo man, my name is Joe. Nice to meet you. Who are you?''
- ''Hi man, I'm Danijel. Nice to meet you. I'm from Bosnia and we run startup called Printheos.''
- ''And my name is Danijel too. Yes, I know, two Daniels. We're in a same team too.''
- ''Holy crap, two Daniels, from Bosnia, in the same team. I'll definitely remember your names. Nice to meet you guys. What do you actually do?''
- ...

Similar thing happenned with all the new people.
- ''Two Daniels? Same country? Same team? Cooool man, nice to meet you!''
That same name situation was an excellent ice-breaker. You can't forget about two guys from Bosnia with the same name. :)

Then, the event started, and about 30 of us sat down in a circle. Some of the people were BlackBox residents, and others were visiting. We started with introductions, but of course, everyone already knew our names :) Some of the people were founders/co-founders of some pretty successful startups (roopic.com, inprisltd.com, melusyn.com...). When the Q&A part of the event started, people would say someone's name and ask them a question. Guess who was asked the first couple of questions? Two Daniels, of course.

While the event was going on, everyone had couple of beers, and naturally, that helped us to relax. All in all, we met some very interesting and cool people. Let's just mention some of them: Joe,17 year old investor, who also works with his brother on their startup company who was there with his girlfriend, Josh, Joes older brother, who runs his own startup, and is a very funny guy, Shiv - a guy from Toronto, Bob - Startup TV show director/producer,  Lee, who works in an investment company called GSV (they were among the first to invest in Twitter), Amelia, Xavier and bunch of other very cool people...

Interesting thing happened later on, when we started talking about stuff other than business. Geography, for example. At one point we were telling people about Bosnia and most of them didn't even knew where the country is. I remember somebody said:
- ''Ooooh I think i know where Bosnia is. Is it near to Russia?''
I was laughing so hard I almost fell off my chair. So we tried to explain more about Bosnia, how beautiful it is. We told them about the low costs of living, how you can drive a car even if you don't have your licence and things like that. They were amazed. Joe was very eager to find out more about our conutry, he asked questions all the time, and at one point he turned to his girlfried and shouted:

''-We have to go there!!!'' :)

Later on, Joe pulled me aside and said:

- ''You like Giants?? You ever saw the game?''
- ''Well, yes I do like them. They're my favorite team. (what giants???). But I never had the chance to see the game... Like I said, this is my first time in the States.''
- ''Then you'll have to see the game bro. When you got some free time this week, text me and I'll take you. I already have the tickets.''
- ''Oh yeah! Joe, my brother! You just became my best friend!'' :))

So, that day was definetly a good one! We met some really interesting people from all over the world and got a chance to swap some stories and learn a lot.
That's how our first/second day in Sillicon Valley ended.

We'll keep you posted about our adventures as much as we can, so stay tuned!

PS: Since we just arrived, we were pretty confused and tired so we forgot to thank our sponsors for making this trip possible. So thank you all for your support:
