At last year's Startup Weekend Sarajevo one of the awards that we have won was staying in Blackbox Mansion, an accelerator for startups in Atherton near San Francisco, in the heart of Silicon Valley. And today, more than eight months after, two members of the Printheos team (Danijel Dedic & Danijel Dzankic) went on this long and exciting journey. In the next seven
days we will try to describe our impressions and experiences from Silicon Valley.

So, here we go!

Saturday, July 28

Early in the morning, we said goodbye to Bosnia and Herzegovina and took the bus to Zagreb from where we had the first flight to California. In Zagreb we met  our friends Luka Mijatovic, Matej Trbara and Danijel Kunkić, who were kind enough to give as a place to stay for the night. Since they are also working at their startup company, we had great night talking about it and exchanging experiences. Hanging out, talking and drinking beer with those guys realy helped us to releax before our first flight.

Sunday, July 29

Our trip to San Francisco started in Zagreb, where we had first one of three flights.
So, first there was one hour flight to Vienna, afterwards we had a 9 hour flight to New York, and then 7 hour filght to San Francisco. In Vienna, we had a situation where the lady behind the check-in desk told us with a smile on her pretty face that Danijel Dedic (our CEO) was selected for random security check, about 15 minutes before the flight. Given the short time before the flight and the huge number of people that were waiting in a line for that same flight, we were “a little” afraid that Danijel wont be able to get a board on a plane and that he will see the Silicon Valley only on postcards :) Luckily takeoff was delayed more than half an hour and our CEO was able to board on a plane. Another interesting thing that happened after landing in San Francisco, whas  that we successfully and safely landed, but our luggage was lost somewhere between NY and SF. We went to baggage claim office to file a report about our lost baggages, where they assured us, that our baggage will be there in the morning. We were sceptical about it, but we also we didn't have any choice. Did I mentioned they said that they'll deliver it to address we gave them. Cool, at least we don't have to drag them arround with us :)

Monday, July 30

Loosing luggage came out to be a very positive thing, and here's why. Prior to joining BlackBox we had all morning free, and because we did't have our luggage with us, we were free to go and explore San Francisco. And early in the morning we went in the center of town and found out some new interesting things. In San Francisco, the coffee shops and fast food restaurants don't open until 10 am. Actually, the most of them open at 11 pm, but since we were allready in city at 6:30 we were in desperate need of some coffee, breakfast and toilet, but that didn't happned at least until 10:30am. Hmmm lazy Americans :) Another thing is that the San Francisco mornings are extremely windy and kind of cold, you can even say pretty cold, so people are wearing jackets, scarves and all kinds of warm clothes. Of course, the two of us - brave highlanders from the Balkans have wandered around in short sleeve T-shirts. Yes, people at the streets were giving us funny looks :) The city itself, the people, the atmosphere in the city is quite different from what we are used to at home. Alcatraz, the Golden Gate bridge, marina, hills, parks, buildings, everything was so interesting that in the end we spent the whole day exploring and enjoying the city.
After San Francisco city, we decided to go and check-in at Blackbox mansion, were we planned to stay next week. When we arrived in front of the house, the first impression was: WOW.. Movie like house, with large backyard, pool, outside jacuzzi, pool house, lot's of rooms, etc. We were veeeeery pleasantly surprised. After the door bell, first thing we heard was: “OMG, you people from Bosnia, your luggages gets lost and it arrives here before you do” and they laughed and introduced themselves to us.
BlackBox mansion itself is very special. There are thirteen people here, coming from all over the world. Pakistan, Israel, Belgium, France, Poland and of course California. Three of them are working in Blackbox, and everyone else came here with their own ideas for starting business and most of them are already in the implementation phase, earning a solid first money.
Atherton, the place where the BlackBox is located is 15 minutes from Palo Alto, where the headquarters or offices are of all giant IT companies. The picture below illustrates the best of what we are talking about.

After three days of travel, all day exploring San Francisco, hungry, dazed and confused by the jet lag and with feet full of blisters we were ready to go to bed. But before that, we had a nice, quick chat with residents of the house. Afterwards we emptied their fridge and went to bed. There was a lot of serious work and meetings waiting for us the next day. And that’s something you're gonna read about in our next post.

Until then chill out! ;)
